The SACCADE™ intervention model

Follow-ups and guidance

Follow-up with an autism support specialist (special educator)

An autism support specialist works directly alongside the autistic individual, using a cognitive and pedagogical remediation approach. The precision and uniqueness of this approach is possible thanks to the work we do to address the “hidden” aspects of someone’s autistic needs, according to the SACCADE™ model. An autism support specialist works closely with the psychologist, neuropsychologist, or psychoeducator on file.

Objectives

Intervention targets are established during the needs assessment and are gradually adjusted according to the autistic individual’s development. Several intervention targets are possible; we always aim for balanced development and work alongside the autistic individual to:

  • Reduce anxiety
  • Improve understanding
  • Promote communication
  • Improve visual attention
  • Decrease the intensity and frequency of autistic crises
  • Facilitate flexibility of thinking, etc.

Target clientele

Any autistic person, regardless of their age.

How it works

  • Through targeted activities (transformed play materials) or themes for directed discussions, the autism support specialist applies the tools from the SACCADE™ model, including the SACCADE Conceptual Language™.
  • The frequency of interventions varies according to needs. The SACCADE™ model relies on accuracy rather than on any particular intensity of interventions.
  • Depending on progress, review or reassessment meetings with our professionals may be recommended to update the direction of the interventions.
  • Each meeting lasts 50 minutes, whether in-clinic or via tele-practice.

Psychological follow-up

The psychologist works directly with the autistic individual. The work is carried out on the “hidden” side of the autistic person’s needs—according to the SACCADE™ model—and therefore assists with the everyday challenges experienced by the autistic person. Completing a needs assessment is a necessary prerequisite for psychological follow-up for those autistic individuals under 18 years of age.

Objectives

Promote the harmonious development of the autistic person when psychological difficulties are present, including anxiety management, suicidal ideation, psychological distress, emotion management, anger management, self-esteem problems, identity issues, understanding their diagnosis, etc.

Target clientele

Any autistic person aged eight and up.

How it works

  • The psychological follow-up consists of verbal exchanges supported by the SACCADE Conceptual Language™ (SCL™).
  • Each individual meeting is with a psychologist.
  • Each meeting lasts 50 minutes, whether in-clinic or via tele-practice.

Psychoeducational follow-up

The psychoeducator works with the autistic person and their family. The precision and uniqueness of this service is possible thanks to the work that’s done on the “hidden” side of autistic needs, according to the SACCADE™ model.

Objectives

Promote the harmonious development of the autistic person when adaptive difficulties are present, such as anxiety management, emotion management, self-esteem problems, identity issues, understanding their diagnosis, etc.

Target clientele

Any autistic person, regardless of their age.

How it works

  • Through targeted activities (transformed play materials) or directed discussion themes, using tools that stem from the SACCADE™ model (including the SACCADE Conceptual Language™).
  • The meetings are with the autistic person and/or their parents and are provided by a psychoeducator.
  • Interventions can be ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the need.
  • Each meeting lasts 50 minutes, whether in-clinic or via tele-practice.

Psychosocial follow-up

Objectives

Allow parents, partners, or spouses to talk about the everyday challenges they encounter with the autistic person in their life in order to help them progress in their parental or conjugal role, find a family balance, come to terms with their feelings of parental competence, or feel better equipped to interact with the autistic person in their life.

Services for siblings are also available so that they can better understand the various issues related to autism as well as each person’s role within the family.

Target clientele

Any parent or guardian with an autistic child, regardless of the child’s age. Any partner or spouse of an autistic person.

How it works

  • Parents, guardians, partners, spouses, or family members meet with a social worker at the clinic or in tele-practice.
  • Interventions can be ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the need. The frequency is determined alongside the family member.
  • Each meeting lasts 50 minutes, whether in-clinic or via tele-practice.

Parental guidance

Parental guidance often occurs in combination with the individualized follow-up that the autistic person receives, as parents can benefit from the support of a clinic professional in order to develop and facilitate common goals. Parental guidance can be led by autism development specialists, psychoeducators, psychologists, and neuropsychologists, as needed.

If the family member has taken at least the first two workshops from either the Family Workshop Track (PACA1 and PACQ2 ) or the Professional Workshop Track (FISP1 and LSC1 ) it is possible to support them in their use of the SACCADE Conceptual Language™ (SCL™) in order to review the ideas they’ve learned and promote the use of the SCL™ in everyday situations.

Even if the autistic child isn’t currently being seen at the clinic, parents can still benefit from this service. An initial evaluation meeting will first have to be set up, however.

Objectives

Several options are possible depending on the needs of the child and their family. For example, these sessions can:

  • Answer parents’ questions related to the everyday life of their autistic child.
  • Improve their understanding of autistic manifestations and how their child functions.
  • Guide parents or family members with daily interventions to help them adopt strategies that promote their child’s development.

Target clientele

Any parent, grandparent, or guardian with an autistic child, regardless of their age.

How it works

  • Parents or guardians meet a professional at the clinic or by videoconference.
  • Interventions can be ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the need. (Regular follow-ups are recommended when the autistic person is working with the clinic, as this facilitates the implementation of interventions by aligning on the same goals and strategies on a daily basis).
  • Each meeting lasts 50 minutes, whether in-clinic or via tele-practice.
